One of the founders of History & Policy, Professor Virginia Berridge, has co-edited a new study entitled Lessons from the History of British Health Policy, published on open access as part of the British Academy’s Policy Histories series. The volume points to the importance of looking at British health policy in a much longer perspective than is usually the case, starting not with the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948 but with the passing of the 1848 Public Health Act. The report points to ‘significant continuities and ongoing challenges’ over that period. A contributor to the volume is History & Policy Senior Associate, Professor Sally Sheard, whose chapter considers British health policy 1974-2022.
