Policy Engagement Skills Training

The Midlands 3 Cities Doctoral Training Partnership will co-host a training day with H&P on Nov 4th 2015 in Sheffield, providing opportunities to quiz H&P historians on their policy interventions, and plan for making arts and humanities research more impactful. And on Dec 2nd  2015, the London Arts and Humanities Partnership will offer a training day themed around Government, Civil Society and Law, where the innovative work of H&P will be showcased to early career researchers from King’s College London, University College London and the School of Advanced Studies.

Presentations focusing on different types of engagement and policy will be given by Dr Laura King, Leeds University – Fatherhood and probation: local and national policy impact, Dr Adrian Bingham, Sheffield University – Child sexual abuse: historicising ‘historical’ abuse and Professor Sally Sheard, Liverpool University – Working with the Department of Health.

Participants in this course will have the opportunity to learn and identify:

  • Opportunities, mechanisms and audiences that will enable their research to have public policy impact
  • Assess the risks that come with public engagement
  • Use case studies to reflect on how academics have engaged at both local, regional and national levels with public policy concerns
  • Home in on the key messages that their own research may have and learn how to communicate them successfully
