Maplin: the battle over London’s third airport in the 1970s
5 February 2014
This workshop piloted a new format for H&P events in government, featuring a case study, in this case Maplin Airport, and breakout groups which considered various documents from the 1970s to understand how and why decisions around airport infrastructure were reached at the time.
Dr Duncan Needham, Associate Director of the Centre for Financial History, University of Cambridge, facilitated the workshop, which was attended by 20 senior civils servants from the Airports Commission, Downing Street, the Department for Transport, as well as the Treasury.
The workshop was re-run at the request of the Airports Commission on 27 March 2014.
