Speakers at the Colloquium in honour of Professor Simon Szreter on 7 June 2024.
On Friday 7 June, St John’s College, Cambridge hosted a special colloquium entitled ‘Health and Wealth: debating demography, gender, politics, welfare and policy’ to mark the retirement of one of History & Policy’s co-founders, Professor Simon Szreter. Organised by Keith Breckenridge, Pedro Ramos Pinto and Ben Griffin, the event celebrated Simon Szreter’s wide ranging academic achievements and contribution in the fields of demographic history and policy engagement.
In separate panels Sian Pooley and Ben Griffin spoke about his impact on the history of declining fertility, and Kate Fisher and Anne Hanley on the history of gender, sexuality and marriage. In the afternoon, Philip Kreager, Michael Woolcock, Graham Mooney and Elias Nosrati discussed Simon’s contribution in the fields of public health policy and development, and Philip Murphy and Ornit Shani spoke about policy engagement and the work of History & Policy.
The day concluded with Simon’s valedictory lecture entitled ‘Born into the Turbulent Flow of History’. A recording of the lecture can be found here.
