FoE is examining business in its 10 Big Ideas to Change the World – part of the NGO's planning strategy, Routemap for a more sustainable future. Historians are invited to suggest research and readings that throw light on the following questions:

  • Is ‘short-termism' a new phenomenon?
  • Were companies ever more 'caring' about employees and the environment?
  • Has the culture of business changed significantly over time?
  • When have capital markets had the most positive influence on society at large?

Mike Childs, Head of Science, Policy and Research at FoE, says: 'We want to get a sense of how business has changed over time for better and worse, and what created the change.'

Please send your suggestions of relevant research and readings (publicly accessible) to historyandpolicy@kcl.ac.uk by the end of July 2014.

The above is part of the wider FoE-H&P collaboration to understand how and why change has happened in the past – the conditions and catalysts of transformations, whether in behaviour, policies or norms. Engaging with historians helps FoE chart its campaign strategy for the next 10-20 years. Following a successful workshop with H&P historians, H&P and FoE are co-organising a conference in Spring 2015 at King's College London. More details will be available here in the coming months.
